CLUB RUBY & FINNSOFT
RELEASE MUSIC VIDEO GAME
VIDEO GAME
NZ band ‘CLUB RUBY’ release their new music video game, inspired by their EP ‘Was God Birthed!?’. Developed by brand new Aotearoa indie game studio FINNSOFT, this is the latest endeavour of musician and radio personality Finn Johansson.
Led by President Ruby (lead vocals) and Vice President Hon! (bass), Club Ruby is an Auckland-based band sharing a passion for both music and video games.
After a chance meeting between Finn and Vice President Hon at a coding bootcamp, it was only a matter of time before a “music video-video game” was conceptualised.
"We wanted to break away from the conventional music video release," says Vice President Hon. "Creating a video game felt like an innovative and thrilling way for fans to engage with our music on a whole new level."
“Will they see me the same? If I walk away? I wish I could pray all my demons away”
- Lyrics from ‘Was God Birthed!?’
Available on STEAM now, the game invites players to embark on a journey of growing up and finding your own curiosity in a world that tries to define your spirituality for you - inspired by Club Ruby's EP x track "Was God Birthed!?" (feat. Reuben Hudson).
This game is nothing like the throwaway 2D platformers that bands typically release to promote their songs. In Was God Birthed!?, Players explore a lush, liminal museum in first person with surreal surprises at every turn as they take the role of a tween avoiding their dad with their wits and scooter, to make it downstairs in time to catch the Club Ruby Rave!
“I’ve always dreamed of being involved in the making of a video game. I was always doing creative projects with my cousins when I was younger, which included coding little games that we could play with each other. I wanted to bring back that mixed feeling of joy and wonder of the world that you feel as a child, while also asking the big questions.”
